Chemtronics provide a range of solder flux dispensing pens that allow for the controlled and precise application of flux. Whether you’re working on a manual hand soldering project or an automated PCB process, solder flux is essential in creating a strong bond between components.

Learn more about Chemtronics solder flux and how you can use it to achieve better results from soldering.

What is solder flux?

Solder flux is a chemical cleaning agent that is designed for use while soldering electronic components to circuit boards. Flux can come in a solid, paste or even liquid form depending on the task at hand.

What does solder flux do?

Solder flux accomplished three main things, all of which are highly useful in achieving better results while soldering. First, it reduces oxidisation, which is important because solder makes a stronger bond with the non-oxidised metal.

By removing the impurities on the circuit board, solder flux also allows the solder to spread out more evenly. This means the joint will look better and because it has been evenly formed, it will improve the electrical conductivity in the solder.

When should I use solder flux?

Solder flux should be used before and during the soldering process. Using it before you begin soldering is essential as it allows the chemical agent within the flux to prepare the metal surface for soldering. If you begin soldering without first applying flux, your solder application will be unreliable and you’ll likely be left with a weak bond.

Before applying solder flux, it’s recommended that you use a strong solvent to clean the metal surface. This is to ensure that any debris, grime or other particles are cleared away before you apply the flux. This, in turn, will help the flux to be more effective.

Cleaning flux away

After the flux has done its job, you may need to clean it away. This depends on which type of flux you have used, as some can be left as they are while others are corrosive. It’s essential to remove any corrosive flux because their residue can damage the circuit board long after it has been manufactured.

When using Chemtronics no-clean solder flux, it’s not essential to wipe residue away afterwards. However, for best practice, it’s generally recommended that you should clean away any visible left-over flux with lint-free dry wipes. Or another way to remove flux is by using flux removers. This is partially for aesthetic reasons but also because the leftover residue could still cause minor issues if left unattended.

How to use Flux Off

How do I know which flux to use?

There are lots of different types of flux out there, so it can be difficult to know which one is best suited for your project. The good news is that Chemtronics supply the three main kinds of flux dispensers, so you can choose the best one for your project:

Here at V Tech SMT, we have an excellent understanding of the Chemtronics solder flux product range.
