Torque calibration: What is it and why is it important?
Torque calibration allows us to accurately measure the torque settings on tools. We explain why this is important and which industries benefit the most from torque calibration.
What is torque calibration?
Simply put, torque is the measurement of the rotational force around an axis. If you have ever unscrewed a bottle cap, you should have an intuitive understanding of torque. Now imagine that when screwing the bottle cap back onto the bottle, you tighten it too hard and the bottle cap becomes stuck. In this situation, you have applied too much torque.
Torque calibration is used on tools to make sure they only apply a certain amount of torque. To use our bottle analogy, it wouldn’t matter if you screwed the cap on too tight because it wouldn’t seriously damage the bottle and the cap would still serve its purpose.
But when it comes to the production of expensive products, such as inspection equipment, using too much or too little torque could lead to problems. Components need to be fastened securely enough that they aren’t loose but also aren’t so tight that delicate materials are damaged. This is where torque calibration comes into play.
Torque calibration allows us to accurately measure the torque settings on tools. It means we can be certain that the tools will meet the exact torque required. This is important because it ensures consistency and quality, especially for assembly lines that produce thousands of products every day.
Why is torque calibration important?
Torque calibration is important because it plays a vital role in ensuring that equipment is operating at peak performance and products are being manufactured correctly. In an organisation, torque calibration can be useful for production, quality control, and servicing.
In a large-scale operation, having well-calibrated torque tools means you can save time, money and materials. Torque tools allow you to guarantee repeatable accuracy. This means that each one of your products will be correctly assembled without the risk of any ill-fitting components becoming loose.
Which industries make use of torque calibration?
There are many sectors that make use of accurate torque calibration, with the automotive, aviation and defence industries topping the list. The guarantee of accurate torque calibration for tightening fasteners and joints is mandatory for legal health and safety compliance. This applies to vehicles, aeroplanes and defence equipment.
Depending on the product and its specifications, manufacturers working across these industries would make use of a number of torque tools. This could include anything from torque drivers to torque wrenches and other accessories.
These tools play a vital role in the production of many appliances, machines and vehicles we see on a daily basis. Vehicles, buildings and even certain household appliances could not be safely constructed without the use of torque calibration.
The best torque tools
Torque calibration equipment is highly useful for large-scale production lines. Torque testers allow you to quickly set up or test tools prior to assembly, so you can be sure that your torque tools are well-calibrated before you begin production. We would recommend the Kolver K series as they feature in-built transducers and allow for precise control of torque.
Here at V Tech SMT, we are vastly experienced in torque drivers and tools. We have found Kolver to be the best producers of torque drivers. Kolver supplies a range of well-calibrated and highly accurate drivers that will allow you to consistently and securely assemble components. With over 30 years of experience, Kolver has made a name for itself as reliable producers of outstanding torque drivers and accessories.
